In the left corner of the room, right next to the wall, we noticed two chairs; one is empty and the other supports a viola da gamba. The neck of the instrument is gently resting on the seat of the chair. On the floor, very close to the viola da gamba, a small blue velvet envelope holds a piece of rosin.
The musician approaches the viol and brings it to her. She takes possession of the space that had previously been occupied only by the instrument. She sits down in her chair and takes the viola da gamba between her arms and legs. It is the moment of coziness. Music, sound, silence, space and time, always time.
To provoke the magic of musical making.
My choice for the viola da gamba was motivated by the emotion I felt when I listened to its sonority. The peculiar resonance of the viol is able to encompass the player, the walls, the floor and the audience.
With extensive teaching experience in Viola da Gamba, Cecilia was the head teacher for viola da gamba at the Escola de Música de Brasilia (Brasilia Music School) from 1995 to 2018. The years spent at the Escola de Música de Brasilia also provided many opportunities for professional achievements, such as: the creation of the ensemble "Gambas Candangas", the organization and coordination of the annual Viola da Gamba Week, and teaching appointments in six International Summer Courses. An important accomplishment was the inception and implementation of the Basic and Technical three-year courses in Viola da Gamba, both approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC).
She was guest faculty at the Historical Performance Meetings held at the Music Department of the Federal University of Pernambuco (2010-2014), and at the 27th International Festival of Brazilian Colonial Music (Juiz de Fora/MG - 2016), teaching viola da gamba.
